Renowned radio jock Thato Sikwane, famously known as DJ Fresh is back on the mic, but with a twist. Newly launched weekly podcast WAW – What A Week with DJ Fresh – is the  deejay’s brainchild, which sees him make his much-anticipated return.

The last time the media personality was behind the microphone was back at Metro FM for the popular morning slot FreshBreakfast, off the back of over a decade spent at 5FM. Sikwane’s tenure at Metro FM came to a halt when he ran into some differences with SABC Radio management over strong language on air and subsequently took a break from broadcasting. The DJ comes back rejuvenated this year with the announcement of his new podcast after more than two-years away from being on air.

What A Week with DJ Fresh Launched

News of the podcast took social media by storm as the DJ teased fans of his long-awaited return on several occasions. Recently, his appearance on Podcast and Chill as the substitute co-host in Mac G’s absence reminded fans of his infectious voice and wit as he swapped tortured puns with Sol Phenduka.

At the time of writing, the podcast had amassed just over 13k subscribers, sharing the mic with popular figures such as DJ Sbu, Oskido, Celeste Ntuli and many other guests. In a statement, the DJ divulged his new venture into digital audio and explained that the journey he had now chosen was a journey of reach and impact; and that music, conversation and presence was all a part of it.

The Big Dawg’s venture into podcasting follows the footsteps of other embattled radio personalities such as Gareth Cliff, DJ Sbu, and MacG who have found success after getting the chop from mainstream radio.

The uniquely-named podcast tackles highly debated and hushed topics that are usually shunned in mainstream media. One of the segments that you can expect from the podcast is the guests’ hot take on ‘You can’t make this sh!t up!’.

The guests share their opinions about the most pressing issues within our borders and abroad. The scope of topics stretches beyond laughs and gags, to the state of SA political affairs and everything under the sun.

For fans of his music, DJ Fresh let the cat out of the back on the first episode that his upcoming album, Voices of Hope 2 is set to dropped in 4-5 weeks’ time. While we wait for the drop, you can catch new WAW episodes once a week on YouTube on Fridays at 3pm for a wrap of society’s week-in-review.
